Open House Garden Tours

Gardening and off-grid tours of Wintergreen will be held once a month from June through October. Come to this free event and learn about how our straw bale lodge keeps us cool in the summer and warm in the winter, with the help of the sun (and a bit of propane!).

View our traditional gardens, including a Victory Garden modeled after a mid-size WWII garden in Pennsylvania – full of vegetables that are easy to grow and do not require a large amount of space. Another traditional garden at Wintergreen, popular in many First Nations cultures, is the Three Sisters Gardens. It features corn, beans, and squash – plants that thrive when grown together. Yet another garden based on the principle of companion gardening is our not-so-traditional “Spaghetti Garden” featuring basil, tomatoes, parsley and other ingredients for making a tomato sauce.

You can also learn about the process of vermicomposting (using worms to create compost), sponsored by Gerrie Baker of the Worm Factory. Another composting approach shows how Compostec’s Green Cone technology “digests” food waste including bones and oils.

Spend part of your time wandering through our 200 acres of land on self-guided trails. Bring your lunch and make a day of it!

The Open Houses will take place on June 12, July 24, August 14, September 11, and October 23 from 11 am – 4 pm.
