A year-round education and retreat centre in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve in Southeastern Ontario awaits you at Wintergreen Studios. Wintergreen has a triple focus: culture, education, and the environment. We offer a variety of short courses in the fine and domestic arts, as well as retreat and meeting facilities for individuals and groups.
Guests at Wintergreen have access to a network of over a dozen trails for self-guided hikes through the 204-acre property. The land features mixed forests and meadows, granite outcroppings, ponds, marshes, and a glacier carved lake. It is home to a wide range of plant life and wildlife. Our simple and comfortable accommodations include private rooms, shared rooms, woodland cabins, and tenting for those who prefer to sleep under the stars. We serve bountiful meals, featuring local and organic foods, much of which is grown in our own gardens. There are always vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options, and we also serve fish, poultry, pork, goat, and beef.
Wintergreen Studios is a not-for-profit organization. We were incorporated in September, 2007 and received charitable status in July, 2008. The lodge was built in the summer and fall of 2008 and our first workshops were offered in the fall of 2008. In addition to our workshops and retreats, Wintergreen partners with the Wintergreen Renewable Energy Co-operative, a community based energy initiative, and is home to Wintergreen Studios Press.
Our main lodge is built of straw. To learn a bit about how straw bale building is making a recovery world wide, watch the video below!
