Like any other not-for-profit educational centre, Wintergreen thrives on the generosity and goodwill of its friends, members, and participants. We invite contributions of materials, volunteer time, and direct donations to support our work. You may make a secure online donation through CanadaHelps (see below for more information), and a receipt for income tax purposes will be issued to you instantly by email. You can also help by spreading the word about our programs, place, and people.
WINTERGREEN TURNS TEN
From 2017-2019, we are running a capital campaign to celebrate our 10th year and to build for the future. Three programs form the heart of the campaign: Expand Our Reach, the Land Art BioBlitz, and Artist Fellowship. Click here to learn more about all three programs.
Expand our Reach ($75K)
Expand our Reach aims to bolster Wintergreen’s existing offerings, bringing 10,000 new people to Wintergreen over the next decade (and we’re happy to welcome back the 15,000 people we have already met!). One thing that we’ve learned over the past decade is that once people come to Wintergreen, they immediately understand – in a visceral way – what bounties the land and the lodge and the people have to offer. One of our Board members only half-jokingly says that once you drink the Wintergreen water, you’re hooked for life.
Land Art BioBlitz ($45K)
The Land Art BioBlitz Program will expand our already successful BioBlitz activities to reach more school-aged participants. We are keenly aware that Wintergreen attracts adults in the middle and later stages of life, and growing our BioBlitz presents a natural way of involving a larger cross-section of youth, offering them what the land has to teach, inspiring a sense of wonder, and modeling concrete sustainable behaviours while building hope for the future.
Artist Fellowship ($35K)
Artists will live and work at Wintergreen, earning a living wage in addition to receiving room and board. During their residencies, they will devote most of their time to their art, enjoying the solitude of Wintergreen without the distractions and pressures of daily life. Artists’ stays will be punctuated with times where the lodge is filled with budding artists, so that artists will also be able to share their knowledge with a wide range of participants, building connections as they do so. We mean to attract visual artists, to be sure – painters, sculptors, photographers. But we will welcome applications from all artistic arenas – dancers, musicians, writers, woodworkers – all will be encouraged to apply.
At the heart of any charitable organization is the cadre of volunteers that keep the organization energized and viable. Wintergreen is no exception. We were overwhelmed by the number of volunteers who helped in the building of our strawbale lodge in 2008. Since then, we have enjoyed the pro bono services of volunteers and firms in the following ways:
- Kitchen staff with experience working in community and commercial kitchens volunteering to cook and serve at workshops.
- Graphics design by a student intern who contributed many hours of personal time continuing to refine our materials once the internships had ended.
- Off-grid system maintenance by both student interns and employees who installed our solar-based renewable energy system.
- Business consulting by a Toronto firm specializing in start-up for small businesses.
- Press releases through the Frontenac Community Futures Development Corporation.
- Marketing strategy consulting and legal advice from a number of highly successful owners of small businesses and consulting firms.
- Garden planning and planting by a horticulturalist completing an internship at Wintergreen.
- The design of interactive trails, featuring botany and art-making, by a student intern.

From time to time, we have an opening on the Board of Directors. If you are interested in serving on our Board, please contact us directly. Potential board members should:
- Be committed to the development of a sustainable society and have an affinity for the arts in all forms—the fine arts, the performing arts, the outdoor arts, and the domestic arts.
- Subscribe to the Mission Statement of Wintergreen Studios.
- Commit to a minimum of three years on the Board, and prepare for and attend all of its meetings (estimated at 3 hours every four months).
- Spend about 2 hours each month in additional Committee or Working Group. Current opportunities include: Marketing and Communications Committee, Garden Volunteer, Finance Committee.
- Meet specific skill and experience gaps as identified by the Board. Current expertise gaps include: business, accounting, fundraising, publicity and marketing.
- Not represent any other organization or interest that could create a conflict of interest.
- Participate in an introductory period that includes: an exploratory interview with the Chair or designated Board member, an orientation tour of Wintergreen Studios and grounds, and participation in at least one Wintergreen program (if not involved in one previously).
Wintergreen is always grateful for donations of cash or in-kind contributions. As a registered charity, we issue receipts for all donations received.
We welcome one-time and monthly donations through CanadaHelps. For as little as the price of a cup of coffee a week, your monthly donation of $15 adds up for Wintergreen—a few donations like yours will cover our monthly land-line phone costs or satellite service. Monthly donations can be set-up simply and securely with CanadaHelps. Here’s some more information about the CanadaHelps system:
- CanadaHelps is a registered charity (charitable number 896568417RR0001) with a mission to engage Canadians in the charitable sector, providing accessible and affordable online technology to both donors and charities to promote – and ultimately increase – charitable giving in Canada.
- CanadaHelps assesses a 3.9% fee from each donation made through CanadaHelps.org. This 3.9% includes the costs of processing the transaction itself including credit card fees, banking fees, reconciliation, disbursement and receipting costs. This is a modest fee for the services that CanadaHelps provides.
