HORSES IN THE SAND

Frankly told with humour and courage, Horses in the Sand, is a collection of stories telling of one queer woman’s journey to becoming a tradeswoman, teacher and artist from meagre beginnings as a child. It speaks of self-acceptance and how identity over time changes. It’s also a celebration of pride in building a home, creating art, telling stories and finding both her natural father and an indigenous community she never knew she belonged to.

Lorrie’s stories had me laughing and crying. As an Indigenous woman who has had similar feelings and experiences I found her candor and humor refreshing. Stories from our women are certainly needed in a field once dominated by men’s stories.

ALCHEMY: A GEOGRAPHY OF LOVE

Alchemy: A Geography of Love is a spiritual journey questioning the meaning of love, life, and death. Set against the grandeur of the great Canadian landscape, and exploring the intersecting forces of the natural environment, spirituality, and the emotional geographies of love, loss, and transformation, Alchemy candidly examines the terrains of the heart.

About Cheryl Sutherland

Photographer, nature lover, retreat guide and student of life, CHERYL SUTHERLAND is the author of various academic publications. Alchemy: A Geography of Love is her first book. Chery lives on a farm property between Godfrey and Westport with her daughter and abundant collection of animals.

TUMBLEHOME: ONE WOMAN’S CANOEING ADVENTURES IN THE DIVINE NEAR WILDERNESS

In the wake of a broken engagement to her One True Paddling Partner, Brenda Missen ventures into the near wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park on a series of solo canoe trips that blow all her perceptions of romance, relationships, God, and her own self (gently) out of the water. In our high-tech, urban age, when so many people are disconnected from the natural world, Tumblehomepart spiritual memoir, part travel adventure, and great part ode to the Earth—is a timely and important exploration of where our real roots lie.

I hate camping, but I loved this book. It is a cleverly structured hymn to the healing power of earth and animals, sky and water, solitude and stillness; a spiritual journey of the soul to the self; and a love story of a most unconventional sort.

—JAN REHNER, author of The House of Izieu and Almost True
