Singing Body

  • Wintergreen Studios 90 Wintergreen Lane South Frontenac, ON Canada (map)
Improvisation is the expression of the accumulated yearnings, dreams, and wisdom of the soul.
— Yehudi Menuhin

The Singing Body promises to be both a relaxing and rejuvenating retreat. You will experience a unique combination of movement and voice, free flowing together.

Technical skills and creative explorations will be interwoven with imaginative games, improvisations, songs and movement. Participants will work at their own level of ability and be supported to learn in their own way.

You will build tools for more easeful posture and alignment, vocal range and expression as well as developing listening skills, and self-awareness through the lens of creativity.

Julia will lead a gentle physical warm up, practices for listening and fun frameworks for moving.

Trish will lead in some singing practices—technical, improvisational and compositional.

Together, something beautiful that moves and sounds will be created!

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Julia Aplin has created dances with theatres, rivers, boxing rings, wading pools, cyberspace, neuroscience labs and forests. Julia works with a wide range of people from elite performers to beginners and has created work with organizations such as Canadian Opera Company, Urbanvessel, Moonhorse Dance Theatre, Dancemakers, Wild Soma, Double Pendulum and The Grove Collective. Julia has been studying and practicing movement for over 40 years.

She has an intense curiosity about the human body in motion and draws on a variety of tools and techniques. She danced full time for 15 seasons with Dancemakers, originating roles in the works of Serge Bennathan and performing around the world. She is an award winning choreographer and has taught movement through University courses, professional academies, private studios and public schools. She continues to explore movement through her artistic collaborations, teaching and healing work.

Patricia (Trish) O'Callaghan is something of a wandering minstrel, with seven solo albums and many interesting collaborations along the way. A speaker of French, Spanish, and German, her early recordings focused on European cabaret, but one of Patricia's most unique talents is the ability to blend a variety of languages and musical genres seamlessly together in her concerts, and completely embody whatever style she is singing at any given moment. She has toured throughout North America, Europe and Australia, and is a Juno nominee and winner. She was a resident Artist at Soulpepper Theatre Company for seven years, and has been a co-conductor of Toronto’s City Choir for 14 years. More recently, she has become faculty at Queen’s University, and is a regular guest host on The New Classical fm.
