Reaching out to the Community

Can’t make it to Wintergreen?
We have options for you!

From our off-site workshops to online resources, we have many ways of reaching out to the community. In addition to the resources you’ll find below, we have teaching resources and unit plans for educators interested in sustainability. Let us know your needs and we’d be happy to help.

Our Workshops

Two-hour interactive workshops for up to 100 people. We’ll come to you!

Since 2012, Wintergreen Studios has received funding from a number of organizations enabling us to develop a series of offsite workshops in partnership with Sustainable Eastern Ontario. For more information or to receive copies of workshop presentations and lesson plans, please contact us.

Get Energy Smart

Did you know that you are probably using energy even when you’re not aware of it? Up to 40% of the annual energy consumption of electronic devices occurs when they're turned off. Leaving a television plugged in — even when it is turned off — draws power just the same. If all of these “phantom” ways of drawing power were eliminated, you would likely save over $100/year. It’s good for the planet, too.

Sustainable Building

Discover a wide range of building techniques that use traditional means and materials to reduce the environmental footprint normally associated with the build environment. Learn about methods that you can use in your own back yard when you decide to tackle that garden shed or guest bunkie. Cordwood, straw bale, and living roofs are among the techniques you’ll explore.

TD Friends of the Environment

The Simple Abundance workshop series was developed through the support of TD Friends of the Environment. It has been delivered to hundreds of pre-service teacher candidates at Queen’s University. Related programming has also taken place at Wintergreen Studios.

Our Resources

Sensory Hikes

With a trail map in hand, and boots for the boggy parts of the trails in early spring or snowshoes for the winter months, head down the trail with a friend or two to see what you can discover. Open your senses to see, hear, and feel the natural world at your doorstep.

Art on the Trail

As you hike down a forest trail or across a virbrant meadow, try one of these eight invitations. What textures can you find in the bark of a tree? How is it that some shadows are more translucent than others? Where do you see shapes repeating over and over again?

Labyrinth Walks

While our stone labyrinth might not be as elaborate as something you would find in ancient Greece, it provides a timeless way of connecting us to the land, to other beings, to ourselves. Walk the labyrinth at Wintergreen with intention and in silence, and see what inner strengths are revealed to you as you wander. Our labyrinth is one of many throughout Ontario.

Scavenger Hike

Going on a hike while looking for common species of all kinds is a wonderful way to get to know a patch of forest—or even your own backyard! You should be able to find these “top 10” species, with a little sleuthing and close attention, in the spring months in southeastern Ontario.

Province of Ontario

Resources and related programming were developed with the support of the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Sports and Recreation Community Fund.
